“Now You Know”! – News Briefs

October 17 is National Mammography Day

Women are encouraged to use this day as a reminder to make an appointment to get a mammogram. The breast x-ray is considered the best early prevention tool. The American Cancer Society recommends annual exams starting at 40 years and going forward.

The earlier breast cancer is detected the greater the chance of successful treatment. There are more than 10,000 mammography facilities in the U.S. that are accredited by the American College of Radiology. It is recommended that all women practice monthly self-examination and receive regular doctor-performed clinical breast exams, in addition to the annual mammogram.

Mammograms are currently the only exam approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to screen for breast cancer for women with no symptoms.
